Kids Connecting the Community

We needed help cleaning / hosing down our backyard patio, enclosure and driveway.  A teen came and did the job in two hours.  He is a very kind, conscientious strong young man.  He followed our direction and we had good conversation along the way.  It’s so good to know and experience young people willing to work and help.  It gives us renewed hope in the younger generation….We look forward to working with him and any other of your young volunteers as we come up with projects we need help with.

On the teen who helped me with my computer: “I had a teen from HANK Services for Seniors (Hire a Neighborhood Kid) come to help me with my computer today. As a senior living alone who is not computer savvy, this was absolutely phenomenal! The young man came in, he was polite, professional and respectful. He was unassuming and treated me with dignity!

On my first job: My first job with Hank Services for Seniors was helping a senior with some gardening work . I was paired up with A., a senior at my school . We go to the same school but I have never met him before .

I was excited and nervous at the same time because this was my first assignment . I didn’t know what was expected of me. 

Mr. And Mrs. M . needed some flowers and small trees planted . They were very nice. They made sure A. we had plenty of water since it was very hot out. This was a great experience because I also got to become friends with a school mate. A. even gave me advice on some of my future courses. Mr. and Mrs. M. were very appreciative and I’m glad I got to help them.

On my their work: Fine young men! I was very happy with their work and asked them back to do more!

On my gardening experience: Mr. And Mrs. K are in their 90s and needed help spreading mulch in their garden and around the yard. Mr K told me how he used to do it all himself but can’t anymore.  The grandkids were too busy and lived too far away to help. 

I helped them with spreading the 20 bags of mulch and a few other gardening jobs. It was a pleasure working with and talking with them, especially with Mr K. He told me about his time playing basketball for a prominent college and I learned more about the neighborhood.

We needed help with outdoor chores. We hired HANK Services for Seniors. The management team was receptive to our needs. Our helpers were cordial, kind, and engaging. They completed the tasks with dispatch. We are happy with the results. We will definitely hire HANK Services again!

From a parent: HANK is an incredible program that truly makes a difference! Its mission of connecting teens with seniors is invaluable and just has so many benefits for both parties. 
In just a few months of participating, my sons have not only developed some practical skills by helping a local senior with gardening and outdoor tasks, but they’ve also improved conversation skills and continued to build empathy and a service-oriented mindset in care of others! More importantly, I believe they’ve had an impact on this senior’s quality of life. Their presence and conversations have given her a little weekly ‘lift’, and maybe even elevated her faith in community in seeing their commitment and willing support.    
As a parent, I’m grateful for the way HANK has broadened their horizons, while bringing joy and needed assistance to one of our elder community members. Every town should have a HANK program! We’re honored to be part of such a positive and impactful initiative! Dana H.

I’ve been a part of the HANK program for a few months. In that time, I’ve helped with gardening, cared for a neighbor’s dog, and done backyard cleanup and organization. It’s been good for me to be involved in my community, and so nice to meet some of my neighbors and develop good relationships with them. I’m happy to be able to help others, and I hope to continue to work with HANK.

Taking this job was the first assignment I was given at HANK Services for Seniors. I was assigned to walk a dog for a week, and while it might not sound like much, it taught me the important skills of commitment, consistency, and responsibility.
