WHAT IS A SCAM?
A scam is when someone tries to trick you into giving them something valuable, like money or personal info
WHO CAN BE A VICTIM OF A SCAM?
Anyone can be the victim of a scam! Some common targets are:
- Children
- People who are isolated and lonely
- People in difficult situations such as grief or loss.
HOW TO PREVENT BEING SCAMMED
- Make strong passwords.
- If uncertain about a message or phone call, call a trusted person.
- Don’t give strangers personal information.
- Don’t click on suspicious links from unrecognized sources.TO
WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE SCAMMED
- Notify your bank
- Contact a trusted family member or friend.
- Contact law enforcement.
- File a report with the credit bureau.
TYPES OF SCAMS
1. Phishing Scams: Fraudulent messages that appear to be from legitimate sources, asking for personal information like passwords or credit card numbers.
2. Investment Scams: Ponzi schemes or fake investment opportunities with high returns with little risk.
3. Lottery & Prize Scams: Scammers tell you that you’ve won a lottery or prize, but you need to pay a fee to claim.
4. Romance Scams: Scammers pretend to be interested in a romantic relationship to gain trust and then ask for money.
5. Tech Support Scams: Scammers pose as tech support, claim there’s a computer issue to be fixed remotely, and ask for payment or access to your computer.
6. Charity Scams: These scams involve fake charities asking for donations.
7. Identity Theft: Scammers steal personal information to open credit accounts, take out loans, or commit fraud in your name.
8. Online Shopping Scams: Fake online stores take money but never deliver goods.
9. Impersonation Scams: Scammers impersonate someone you know or a reputable organization to trick you into giving them money or personal information.
